The Legend of Vox Machina

Prime Video

Season 3 Episode 1

A Deadly Bargain

In disguise, Raishan visits Vox Machina with a promise of aid. She tells them of a vestige capable of defeating Thordak; the Plate of the Dawnmartyr. The team is divided on trusting the duplicitous dragon, but journeys to the city of Marquet to test if she speaks true.

The first episode of season 3 starts with the blistering action and thrills I expect and want from this series. It’s an awesome opening sequence that showcases how cool these characters are as well as how big the stakes for them continue to be. It’s a fantastic sequence that shows Vax as an incredibly skilled rogue.

I love the framing of this episode and how it flows with both the character interactions and the evolution of many of the relationships. The scenes between the characters and Raishan are beautifully tense and it creates a wonderful moment for the viewer to get the backstory on Thordak. It also allows Keyleth to shine as a character coming into her own and embracing her emotions. Marisha Ray does and fantastic job in her scenes with Raishan and I love how it transitions into the evolution of her relationship with Vax.

There are some great teases of future complications for the characters to come both in their overall mission and interpersonal conflicts. Everything in the episode culminates in an awesome confrontation that will test everything the team has and force one of them to look beyond their own emotions in order to trust an enemy. I love how complicated those moments are and how the episode embraces those layered conflicts.

The first episode of third season of The Legend of Vox Machina starts with a bang and doesn’t let up. It also crafts a beautiful balance between the blistering action, nuanced characters and humor that I love from this series. The episode ends on a great cliffhanger for Percy along with the return of a dangerous enemy from his past.
